Lesson plan for project

Lesson 1 using a word processing program to develop sentences

Purpose: Many of the students that I work with have very poor handwriting which leads to frustration when attempting to develop sentences. Practice typing skills and development of sentences when given a model.

Technology used: The software program Microsoft Word Perfect, or other word processing program.
I choose this software because it is available almost anywhere at school and the students are familiar with it.

Procedure: After a group discussion using the spelling words of the week, we will create a sentence for each spelling word (10 words total). For this lesson the words were: here, have, it, in, all, ran, on, saw, that, this . As each sentence is created it will be written on the board. These will then be posted to the classroom website. During the next lesson the students will be asked to either develop another sentence for each word or type those sentences again.

Grading Criteria: This will be a pass fail activity. Passing will be the completion of each sentence. For the creation of sentences I will be looking for a subject and predicate and the sentence to be complete. For the copying sentences, all the information needed to be provided with no spelling errors.

Lesson 2 using games to learn/practice common sight words

Purpose: Students will review and learn the 200 most common sight words using the web based game www.sightwordswithsamson.com.

Materials: A subscription to the above site. The cost is 79.99 for 1 year but you are allowed 30 users for 1 account.

Procedure: After giving students a reading probe of the 200 basic sight words and determining which level is appropriate for each student set each student account up using the software. Students can then use the sight as a center for practicing their words.

Evaluation: Students will increase their knowledge of sight words by 5 new words at the end of each quarter.

Lesson 3 Web Search

Purpose: Students will use the Internet and the following websites within the search engine Nettrecker to research and find 10 specific facts or pictures about the animal of their choice.

Materials: a computer, printer, connection to the Internet, handout with questions to search for, and a Nettrecker account www.nettrekker.com a list of 5 web links that could provide the information necessary for completing the task.

Procedure: Students will be given a handout with 10 facts they need to find about the animal they are researching. Students will use their Nettrecker account to navigate the Internet to find the answers to the questions.

Handout: Students will find the answers to the following questions;
1) A picture of your animal?
2) What species is your animal?
3) Where does your animal live?
4) What country(ies) does your animal live in?
5) Does your animal live alone or in groups? if groups what are they called?
6) What does your animal eat?
7) What would your animal live/sleep in?
8) What are your animal babies called?
9) What kind of skin does your animal have? (fur, scales, feathers etc..)
10) Tell me one interesting fact about your animal.

Grading:
The complete assignment will be worth 100 points, 10 points for each question that is completed.
A passing grade is 80 points or higher.
